Year 10 Biology

Inheritance and evolution. DNA, genes and chromosomes; how meiosis makes every gamete different; predicting offspring with Punnett squares; then variation in a population and natural selection. Concept tutorials with a zoom from body to gene, a live cross board and a beetle population that evolves.

Start1. Where are the instructions?

Genetics

DNA, genes and chromosomes, meiosis, and patterns of inheritance (AC9S10U01).

1Where are the instructions?Not started
2Why is every sperm and egg different? Not started

Meiosis makes gametes. The chromosome pairs separate and each gamete gets one chromosome from each pair, chosen at random, so it has half the number and a different combination. With 23 pairs there are over 8 million combinations.

  1. Engage: copies or combinations?
  2. Explore: make gametes
  3. Explain: meiosis › One of each pair
  4. Explain: meiosis › Three pairs
  5. Explain: meiosis › 23 pairs
  6. Explain: meiosis › In your own words
  7. Elaborate: meiosis and mitosis
  8. Evaluate: look back
Start lesson
3Can you predict the offspring? Not started
6Quick check: mitosis, fertilisation and sex-linked traits OptionalNot started

Evolution

Variation in a population and natural selection (AC9S10U02).

4How different are individuals?Not started

Individuals in a population vary. Measuring one characteristic across a population gives a spread of values, often most near the middle. Some variation is inherited (genes) and some comes from the environment; inherited variation is what natural selection acts on.

  1. Engage: all the same?
  2. Explore: measure a population
  3. Explain: kinds of variation › Continuous or not
  4. Explain: kinds of variation › Where it comes from
  5. Explain: kinds of variation › What gets passed on
  6. Explain: kinds of variation › In your own words
  7. Evaluate: look back
Start lesson
5Why did the beetles change? Not started

Natural selection: individuals vary; more are born than survive; those best suited to the environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on their alleles. Over generations the population changes. Individuals don't change to suit the environment.

  1. Engage: who changes?
  2. Explore: be the bird
  3. Explain: natural selection › The steps
  4. Explain: natural selection › Who changed
  5. Explain: natural selection › No variation
  6. Explain: natural selection › A branching tree
  7. Explain: natural selection › Closest DNA
  8. Explain: natural selection › Back to the kingdoms
  9. Explain: natural selection › In your own words
  10. Evaluate: look back
Start lesson
7Quick check: evidence, new species and evolution today OptionalNot started
